Today I took it down to have a look
and felt your spirit, palpable, inside,
speaking to me from afar.
A Collins Guide: Wild Flowers of the UK
and Northern Europe - harebell, heather, mint,
trefoil, eyebright, rue, bog whortleberry.
Two postcards of Cul Mohr and Loch Assynt,
speaking to me from afar.
A neat, hand-written list of plants you'd seen
in Ross and Cromarty, above Kirkaig –
vetch, carline thistle, gentian, wintergreen,
wild roses blossoming beneath Quinag,
speaking to me from afar.
Between its pages, in a tissue pressed,
a fragile pansy, delicate and dry,
survives the years, proclaims that you were blessed
and celebrates a precious memory,
speaking to me from afar.
