Wreck
That was some tempest, the other evening,
and I still keep finding parts of you
washed up on my mind’s-eye shore.
It doesn’t take jetsam long
to turn into flotsam in the memory
and to float there, going in and out of focus
with the changing of mood’s tides.
Pieces of your ship still float by,
though almost waterlogged with tears now,
and only yesterday, the log came to light.
It read a little like Mutiny on the Bounty,
but neither of us landed in Pitcairn,
or anywhere nearly so exotic.
All I can say is that it made a change
for the man to get in the lifeboat first
and the woman to be left to brave the sharks,
but in the end, I’m glad you made it to an island,
even though it was just a traffic one
and you found that your Green Cross Code
matched your marriage one.
