My Story
We stood in the snow,
the tracks behind us rapidly filling in,
nothing but bright light ahead.
One direction looked
as good or as bad as another.
I thought of stories I had heard
about those who made it back
and about those who didn't.
Would I tell my own, and if not,
would anyone tell one for me?
My partner was looking my way,
awaiting decision,
confident as always that I
would come up with the answers.
The only answer that came that day
was a sickening revulsion,
a desire to rid my life
of seventeen years.
And now that I've done that,
I wonder how, given the chance,
I'll tell my story,
and who - if the snow ever melts –
will amend it for me.
