Smithy
A cavern of stacked centuries, time-warp
of expletive and hammer blow; the fume
of seared hoof-smoke infiltrates, acrid sharp,
anchored to old rafters in fossil gloom.
A battlefield, archaic now and caught
where hand and eye gauged harmonies, and where
reluctant steel was brought to beauty, wrought
and tempered, tamed before the silence here.
It’s in rehearsal now, lest we forget –
the leathern voice of bellows and the coals’
redemptive glow to cherry red, to set
by heat this arc of steel, the fuming spills
of starburst struck raw in its becoming …
Over the anvil shockwave echoes ring.
