Sons' Girl Friends
Welcome as swifts arriving, while they build
their frail claims, their temporary preserves,
swoop shrilly here and there in pairs, in groups
by instinct find the coffee jar and mugs
these bright-eyed spring-time charmers.
Theirs is the effortless enthusiasm of
interchangeable names and tee shirts and affections;
unconsciously condescending to last year’s voices
they fly in the face of prejudice, frown at cigarettes,
bring a new realism in their made-up glamour.
And just as suddenly, no warning given, they’re gone.
Spilt gel sets on the bathroom shelf to-day
The hairs in my comb are any shade but grey.
