The Second Station
Jesus Receives His Cross
These stiff images lately maculate
with tears of waiting weighted with ash
will excite again.
The prisoner in his thought room,
freed from stifling trivia
listens in the night
and sees less darkly through the glass
his yesterdays; hears
the straining stoma of the wind
propel a promise round the corner;
Dreams of handfuls of girls,
the dummies in his window.
Six o’clock lock-up:
stair clattering studs, screws, chains and keys
kept out.
Roll up the hours, thin as a match.
