The Saw Mill
The short cut home
was through the woodyard.
The carpenter’s wife was outside
hanging up nappies,
she had ringlets like the shavings
on the workshop floor,
and milk stains
on the front of her blouse.
Though the mill was idle
beside the pond a mound
of sawdust from the pit
smouldered continuously.
He pedalled slowly past
not catching her eye
but made a small detour
through some scrubby bushes.
His mother had tea ready
when he got in.
‘You’re hot, love’
she said, ‘sit down,
that programme on Vesuvius
is just coming up.’
