White Island
County Fermanagh
He carves an arc through the water, his small boat
cutting the light.Triskele and spiral
spin from the hull. I look at the back
of a Celtic mirror, curvilinear,
patterns drawn from Tara and La Tène.
He docks and goes, motorboat fading;
nothing speaks but the emptied lake
mouthing white words on gravel.
I walk to the statues, a row of eight
by a broken church wall
elongated faces on box-shaped bodies,
their round eyes owled.
I step closer, but their world is far
from the century that clothes me,
satellite dishes on the outer shore.
On this shelf of rock between pagan
and Christian, the liminality
of the dead and the living, I am the ghost.
The statues stare through me,
their stone eyes smooth as pebbles
knowing water will always lisp here,
its cool chalice rippled by the sun.
