her days are spent hustling
shoppers in the precinct
she sings for them
touches dances
fat plastic beads
make a noose
about her flabby neck
each bauble wrapped
in soured skin
stale food
old shoes clamp her toes
dig nails into each other
force new blood
from old sores
mothers cover up
their children’s eyes
young men hiss obsenities
‘show us your tits’.
she does
pushing them
in front of their eyes
like a child
showing off
a new toy
bright-eyed
proud.
