On Myrtle Avenue where Henry once strode —
In Prospect Park where Marianne's elm still stands —
In Bickford's, where Allen scrawled his visions —
Wheel, wheel, take us to the Beach
To Jack's state of skeeters sand sun shame
Shame, Amerika, for what you do now
To the Onondagas in Philadelphia
Shame, Amerika, for Rhodesian chrome
For constant capitalist imperialist war &
For what you do to your native daughters & sons,
Your poets & people of vision. Celebrate you
I still do o my country, crippled, bereft of
Love. Pain all around us.
Cymru, Cymru, I think of you now
In the midst of Brooklyn rubble and energy
And idealism and hatred and Hasidism and prejudice and
Cymru I think of your hills, the sheep
Grazing, the lambs in Spring & the Rheidol
Railway I rode into the womb of Wales —
A good country for sleeping and loving and getting it
Together to come here to America, to
See oneself in relation to.
To have it all fall apart
Only to return to the poem again
For what else can I do except to cry out
LIGHT, give us light
Against all darknesses
And power trips and lies
Torah is Light, the rabbi wrote
LIGHT, not LAW, poetry
is light is love is a SHREEEK!
Against Tiamat, the slime & ooze
Of primeval nada
And the gators
down in Everglades a
'sea of grass' & the Seminoles
unvanquished
