Summer Infatuation
All summer
I am in love with my garden:
every change on its moving body
like Rilke's birds, grows through me.
I grudge journeys,
leaving scent of Madonna lilies,
missing sight of redcurrant rubies
gob-stopping beaks of thrushes.
I'm restless in company.
No-one sings like blackbirds
or gives me a meal as delicious
as drip-down-the-chin Victorias.
Like Emerson
I'm glad to the brink of fear
caught in the throat by earth's beauty
breathing jasmine-laden air . .
And even in autumn
flaming leaves of rowan
and little shuttlecock cyclamen
rouse and rally me.
