Spain
The day-old evening is contented,
learns each fresh sound: an empty bus grumbles
at the gradient; two sports cars tail off;
a voice carries further than sense. The gold
sun has unbalanced the scales, lifted
a new moon out of the sea; and the moon
is quiet, playing with pebbles, rolling them
to and fro in the slow breath of low tide.
But the shore has tipped, the water run off,
tilting its weight onto the far coast, slumped
on sea walls in Newfoundland: beyond
the sand swimming in light, a fisherman
casts out to open water, leans back,
waits for the moon to bring the tide in.
