Chris Sewart
Location
In Toronto, in a warehouse,
are stores of New York garbage.
Aisles of bolted steel shelving
stacked with indexed pizza boxes,
torn subway tickets, grimy Village Voice
newspapers — all years, all months available.
And when the phone rings
they load up a truck
and trundle the fifty dollars an hour debris
to the junction of Bayview & Jarvis.
There, a garbage minder waits,
munches a sandwich and bubbles a cherry cola.
Watches bored police cordon the area
and a gold-card film crew erect NY Street signs.
Then he spreads the trash, dresses the scene
- careful as a Macy’s window designer -
dropping a final fast-food flyer
under a prop Manhattan street map.
He sidewalks back through the crew.
Glancing at the blank Canadian sky
he slides against a generator
and murmurs, “Fuckin’ fakes.”
