Buddhist Notions
I lived with a damaged man
the year I went insane.
Some notion of working off
bad karma had wormholed
into my pickled brain.
Then we became ‘those people’
living down the hall.
Our Saturday night fights
reverberating from that barren fiat
echoing three-in-the-morning smashings
of tiny glass knickknacks
onto each others skulls.
Ah, love.
Yes, I paid in dog years
and aubergine bruises
for each thud and thump
that woke the neighbours up.
Until one day, on the elevator
while picking porcelain
out of my eyebrow, I decided
to convert.
Micheline Maylor will attain her MA in Creative Writing in the Spring of 2001. She is currently working on her first collection and her poems appear in publications in several countries.
