Claire Lynn
Travelling Light
Tapped wheels ring true as horseshoes
all the length of the train.
I have folded my life into a bag
I stow on the rack overhead. Outside
the platform shrinks like a shed skin.
Other passengers offer huge smiles
of seed-pocked water melon;
help themselves to my age, family,
nation, salary. The floor slithers
with spat seeds as black as eyes.
In my head are the tunes
of an alien tongue. Even my name
is transmuted: back to front,
a brushstroke landscape of forest
and mountain I pass through.
Twice I will wake
in a different place,
to scenery suddenly shifted.
Morning wipes from each window
the misted breath of the sleepers.
