The Playing of the Easter Music
Darkness drinks me. Only
the spotlight on my music convinces
I could live in the notes I play.
And we huddle on the lonely
island our spotlights make, feeling black seas
running against us. They
batter this voyaging
song till, from some horizon, the light spreads,
till the faces emerge like waves
from another ocean, their long
night pushed further and further behind. Heads
fixed by candleflame, lives
held for an instant by
a shared light that won’t stay still, that rolls on
over everything, excite
crescendo to our playing. I
think it may be love that comes surging in
over the years to float
this music. I think it
cannot end. I recall the Channel waves
tilting underneath me but not
like this, balancing me so that
I may never fall, so that we climb staves,
chase notes of ringing light.
