Watching
All week the greetings card
with the centrally placed robin
has been on top of the television.
Now I see the snow on which he rests
has a blue shadow, like a man on holiday
who has forgotten his shaving kit.
Also I seem to be more looking down
on the card, than I did when I placed it there –
either the television has been lowered,
or I am rising up just a little,
adjusting myself to get a definitive view.
I start to satellite around the curve of his head,
that is now a brown, soft-feathered moon.
I can see the passage of his song pulsing out
into the universe, stirring comets and planets.
I had thought him just a bird, forgot
how songs travel. Perhaps I’m ready
to squeeze into the card beside the red breast,
take my place on the snow,
by legs as thick as sowing threads.
