Well
If you’re ever in need of water from our local well,
there’s only one way: you’ve got to go down
on your knees to it and lean over
until you see the shiver-shape of your own face
going to bits in the shaken water, a stranger
staring up at you from the granite shards
and limestone pebbles – nutbrown, pale green –
shining on the shallow bottom. So you kneel and
press your vessel (a bucket or plastic gallon bottle)
under, listening to the hollow sounds water makes
being entered, the small commotion in stillness
this need of yours is starting, on your knees as you are
near the main road, but hidden from everybody.
