Rosemary
She gets into the car
smelling of rosemary -
my gardener daughter
has just finished clipping
the cut branches
into a black bin bag.
Each clip releasing a rich aroma
to rival coffee percolating
or burnt popcorn;
the smell of rosemary rushing aggressively
out of her hair.
If I close my eyes
she is a five foot four inch bush
rooted into the front seat,
unlatching mauve butterfly flowers
over the dashboard,
soft chips of green leaves
catapult into the gear box.
For the next few days
the striking memory of rosemary
will dominate the house.
She cannot shower the smell
out of her pores.
It will leave her when it’s ready
and then the interior of the car
return to its usual fusion
of mud and dogs’ hair.
