Martin Anderson teaches in the Language Centre at Hong Kong University. His first chapbook, The Kneeling Room will be published as part of the next issue of Shearsman.
Paul Auster was born 1947 in Newark, N.J., and now lives in Brooklyn. He has published widely as poet, prose-writer, essayist, translator, editor. His books of poems are Unearth (Living Hand, NY 1973), Wall Writing (The Figures, Berkeley 1976), Fragments from Cold (Parenthese, NY 1977), Facing the Music (Station Hill, NY 1980). Translations include selections of André du Bouchet (The Uninhabited - Living Hand, 1976) and Jacques Dupin (Fits and Starts). Later this year, a book of his essays will be published by Sun Press, NY, under the title The Art of Hunger, the title piece of which is published here for the first time. Random House will publish his anthology of modern French poetry next year.

Michael Bullock ’s Black Wings White Dead (Fiddlehead Poetry Books, Fredricton, New Brunswick, Canada) is available from IRD in London, as is the Intermedia Press (Vancouver) volume Contemporary Surrealist Prose Vol 1. He shares space in the latter with Rikki Ducornet amd Hans Carl Artmann. The prose poems here will appear in a collection entitled Last Message Through Rain to be published by Third Eye, London later this year

Johannes Edfelt was born in 1904 in Kyrkefalla, Sweden. Essayist, poet and translator, he has received several prizes, including the Svenska Akademiens Bellmanspris (1954, 1971), the Boklottoriets stora pris (1962) and the Henrik Steffens-Preis (Germany 1967). His many books include the following titles: Högmässa, 1934; I denna natt, 1936; Vintern är lang, 1939; Elden och klyftan, 1943; Braddjupt eko, 1947; Hemliga slagfält, 1952; Under Saturnus, 1956; Insyn, 1962; Adernät, 1968.
William J. Higginson lives in Fanwood, New Jersey, where he edits Haiku magazine and operates the From Here Press. His poems and translations have appeared in various literary magazines and anthologies. His books include Thistle Brilliant Morning - translations from the Japanese (From Here Press, 1975).
Zygmunt Lawrinowicz is a Polish poet living in London, in exile. The poems printed here appeared in their original Polish in the volume Syn Marnotrawny i Inne Wiersze (The Prodigal Son and Other Poems) London, 1968.
Karin Lessing is an American poet living in southern France. Her first appearance in print since her college days was in Montemora, edited by Eliot Weinberger. Since her appearance in the fourth issue of that magazine she has become a regular contributor to it, and has also appeared in Text and Sulfur, Clayton Eshleman’s new magazine. This is her first appearance in Britain.
John Levy’s Among the Consonants has recently appeared from The Elizabeth Press, New Rochelle, NY. (Distributor : SPD).
Stephen Lewandowski lives in Honeoye Falls, New York State, where he works for the Ontario County Soil & Water Conservation District. His most recent book is Inside and Out (Crossing Press, Trumansburg, NY - distrib. Bookslinger)
George McWhirter teaches at the Dept of Creative Writing in the University of British Columbia, Vancouver.
Rochelle Ratner lives in New York City where she edits Hand Book , and is also Managing Editor of The American Book Review. Her most recent book is Sea Air in a Grave Ground Hog Turns Toward, poems dealing with her childhood in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Douglas Woolf is one of America’s most fascinating prose writers. Particularly recommended are the novels Fade-Out (Grove Press, 1957, Penguin 1972), Ya! & John-Juan (Harper & Row 1971), and the story Spring of the Lamb (Jargon Society, 1972). Many of his publications are hard to obtain, but those experiencing difficulties should write to the author at the address on the ad. Otherwise SPD distribute YA and Bookslinger do Spring of the Lamb and Had, a recent story.
William Heyen’s most recent books are The Swastika Poems (1977), Long Island Light (1979), Lord and Dragonfly: Five Sequences (1981), all published by the Vanguard Press, New York. Recent honours include the annual Ontario Review poetry prize (1977), a John Simon Guggenheim fellowship for poetry (1978), and the Eunice Tietjens Memorial Prize from Poetry magazine (1979). He lives in Brockport, New York State.
