Off the Tablets
The world’s deflated since I
decided to test
what was damped down
and stop swallowing little blue pills.
That’s how I found
things wrinkled, tucked
away, shrunken, bitterly unhealed.
Outside, the air hums, either it’s
kids, a fleet of JCBs, World War III
or just the earth’s normal noise,
school run, post van, whatever,
I still wince at simple human traffic.
But what deflates can also take the air.
Maybe I faltered out, blinking into the light
too soon, sick of chemical dependency,
brave because ashamed of that scaffolding.
The upshot is I’ve shifted ground,
wriggled, shivered, glimpsed,
skewed hero in the battle of small steps,
the world ballooning out.
