William Cookson (1939 - 2003)
Acumen would like to take this opportunity of acknowledging the passing of William Cookson, founder and editor of Agenda. I first encountered William in the early 1980s at various functions of the Poetry Society where he served on the General Council. I found him a generous fellow editor, always ready to swap advertising and magazines even though Agenda (especially its ‘special issues’) was often many times thicker and more lavishly produced than this magazine. He also saw the funny side of the many letters and submissions which ended up in the wrong envelopes; myself receiving letters asking if Agenda would publish the enclosed poems and William being requested to publish things in Acumen. As an editor he had taste and courage, courage to ignore fashion and publish what he considered the best poetry. He will be sorely missed.
