For Gold or for God
The Spanish conquistadores couldn’t believe their luck
when they realized that the tips of all of the Aztec
pyramids were made of gold – they shot dead all of the
Aztec warriors including the emperor Montezuma II. This
was in Tenochtitlan, now Mexico City. The Spaniards were
only goldlust incarnate and worshipped Christ with
swords, horses, guns and body armour. Sixty thousand
Spaniards led by Hernando Cortez became millionaires
and aristocrats. That was 1519.
