Lotte Kramer
Kindertransport Reunion
A doddery crowd with the same history,
We hug shoulders and clasp hands,
Weeping, laughing at near newness.
The same faces with stencilled age
We are all survivors of circles of hell
Having slid through some six decades
With the usual joys and losses as shadows,
Able to look back with gratitude at goodness
That has confronted our sceptical childhood.
Whereto now as a new century
Is taking hold with much talk
And almost indecent heralding haste?
Begin again in wonder at the brain’s
Possibilities, stare at the lilac’s candles
Renewing their perfume each spring.
