Interior
a volcanic plain
scattered with pyroclasts
and pumice, debris
brown, grey, black
the bus follows the track
shaking so hard
we can snap nothing
and there is nothing
not a primrose – ash
of an everlasting bonfire
on a table laid
ready for our visit
the kettle steaming –
take the cup
John Greening’s most recent collection was The Home Key (Shoestring 2003) and his next will be Iceland Spar, the result of a trip to Iceland sponsored by the Society of Authors. His book on Yeats came out last year (Greenwich Exchange). He has won both the Bridport and the TLS Centenary prizes. He is a regular reviewer for London Magazine and the TLS.
