Janice Fixter
Fire Cracked
A flamed moth dries
on the window sill
between flat black eyes -
one touch, one misplaced breath
and it will crumble
and smudge into death.
My head is full of leaves
beech leaves, ash leaves
that crisp and crunch
into veins and dust
filling up the spaces
where my skull breathes.
Smoke stains the air
with the ritual autumn burning
of chestnuts splitting in the brazier.
