Beginnings and Desires for Henri Michaux
Sea waves enter the living room because
we are thinking of the sea as we sit here
with our ideas of sea. It is the same when we
think of the birds of the forest at night. Soon
the birds enter the bedroom where the idea nests.
The children taught us this. In the silence of the
bed they lived with small animals and fish.
They were also able sometimes to exchange
places with owls and wood pigeons and the robin.
From the tallest boughs they looked down on
the distant glow of the television screen and
the small dark bedrooms they had deserted.
Why are you so astonished about all this?
We gave you words and you made your own
stories and when you gave up the stick
men and the ladies with bags for bosoms
you had already learnt what colour the
music made and how the song could
change an entire continent. Wow!
