Love Story
The horror lies
not only in the squalor of the room,
mice droppings on the floor,
plates thick with mould,
the crusted scum in pans,
decaying fruit
nor in the sounds,
the endless steady drip of tap to bowl,
bowl into slimy sink,
the scrabbling rats, the periodic blasts
of icy air
but in the stench,
the putrid sweetness and the acid reek
of scrawny feral cats
come to enjoy
the scraps of mildewed meat
left on the shelf.
And he lived here, alone
for twenty years, after she died?
