Ferns
Still sleeping,
the new ferns hold Gryphon heads
erect and listening in the green rain,
listening in their tight, profound sleep
for their cue of loosening light.
Each tiny fist of leaves is clenched
so tight, no impertinent hands
could force open its secrets
under a cold sky.
Each one will take its patient time
uncurling in backward-leaning grace,
like the unwinding stem of a violin.
Then one day it will seem to have happened
all at once: every shy, sealed head
will have unwrapped its plume of hair
and with one twitch shaken it loose.
The hillsides will sway with a sudden forest
that spills jungle shadows in the lanes.
