Whaling
It’s like coaxing a poem
out of the blue
or matching lonely hearts
perhaps, the imperfect art
of waiting for you.
I drop anchor well before morning,
bury myself below,
where i can drift forever
through half-submerged dreams.
Nothing makes any sense really,
except here
no need to wake and worry
a seed of you will surface
ahead of me,
your blindingly iridescent self as obvious
as the night.
No need to stand tide-watch either:
the eclipsing of a mammoth swell,
the overshadowing flux
from exclamation to full-stop.
As I recall, you come in waves,
a body’s eternal crescent,
maul to tail-fin thrusting
in oil-smooth arcs.
This alone returns your oxygen to me,
the bellow of the blow-hole,
the tug of organ music.
At last, a step forward,
i circle the starboard
consumed with shedding an ocean
of tears and nothing else
as darkness comes to swallow me whole.
