Loganberry Crush
The summer we were seventeen
we worked in the kitchens
of a sea-side hotel. Heat blasted
from each opened oven door
and our sweat dropped onto torpid
heaps of washing-up. Like some
pale angel, the white deep-freeze
hummed by the fire escape, crammed
with tubs of sorbet, catering size.
One evening, while the cook
was on his break, I opened the door.
Clouds of icy steam enveloped me.
Delicious. I peeled off a lid, scooped
a handful and licked it. The cold
shock of Strawberry Surprise!
I anointed my burning forehead.
Debbie tried the Apricot & Peach,
a blob on each shoulder, while Kate
dribbled Raspberry Delight over
her knees. I experimented with
Loganberry Crush between my
breasts. We dripped with Orange
Spice and Tahitian Mango. Lemon
Zest trickled down our limbs, sticky
and transparent. And someone said
all we needed was three glasses
big enough to pour ourselves into,
and Jim Morrison ordering dessert.
