London Square
Swift needles from the sun pierce down
Indigo clouds to London town,
And Ariadne's leaden flank
Is wetter than where dolphins drank
In grey lagoons (but jade the sea)—
Smooth elegance for China-tea
In Aunt M's antimacassardom;
Those delicate bulb-sides cried 'Home!'
Involving tapers: parallel lines
(Our minds were weary—Bournemouth pines
And parlourmaids and neighbours' sins—
They strayed) seem monumental pins,
In the Hampstead Tube especially;
They meet at last: infinity
Cloaks their chaste metallic greeting,
(Journeys end in lovers meeting).
Measuredly the ivory hand
Moves and moves that coral strand
In sleepy curves of white and gold,
And Afric's sunny fountains rolled
In shining miniature as bright
As breadcrumbs, where the sparrows fight,
That typists and cheese-champing men
Let fall, then go to work again—
