as wonderful a recognition
Walking a painless landscape:
gentle breeze and warm sunshine
and memories of only best days
playing back as you drift along;
anaesthetic making you smile,
soothing, clearing the bad,
clearing the nagging heartache.
But it’s not quite enough.
Missing most of the sunshine,
you long to do street-moves
on a freestyle bike; long to
cruise on a skateboard over
warm tarmac. Was it really
as wonderful as recollection?
Or are you merely revelling
in some false sense of romance?
When we were young the summer
seemed so endless. Nothing
could hold us back for long;
the impossible became reality.
But youth gives way to nostalgia.
Now, we have to rely on poetry.
Where else could you be this
evening; reality seems irrelevant.
