Weeding
Chickweed, sticky-willy, lady’s smock,
fat hen - slowly, the rusting buckets fill.
It is not easy to concentrate on weeding
on a day like this under an arching sky
of mediaeval blue and with these clouds,
white and fragile as the swansdown
on my mothers nègligée. The child kicks.
My back aches. The family never liked you.
Yesterday’s papers forecast rain. I layer them
between weeds and sprinklings of mown grass.
Upwind, the whistle of your usual train
blows shrill. Bittercress, wound-wort, self-heal -
slowly the compost heap grows high.
It is not easy to concentrate on weeding
on a day like this, knowing you won’t return.
