Back in the Sebnitztal
Pushing luck going on this way
the light going gives few minutes more
the path narrows rising more
and more above torrent-twist
more ice more moss on rocks
cause feet to slide prepare
to fall it is time to retreat
abandon hunt for tower in trees
blind to eye even midwinter fir
beech still deadleaf clad go
back down follow blackgleam on
snowwhite of single railline
on through duskgather deeper
into night to promise must be
a town a station greet as brief
as possible glad to be safe past
man in greatcoat with gun what
it may be who he hunts or avoids
a deserter of occupation army
perhaps anyway is behind forget
a building a structure is silent
empty all is shut black silhouettes
up hill no lights is town is less
feel of welcome or anyway absence of
unwelcome than woods left behind but
then is cliché is people not place
make strange land strange and sound
in night is train at least in dark
of this platform if stops at all
will not be able to see do not
belong in time to stop process of
opening door getting on going stage
by stage back to those where you
belong those close to you those
strange at any tine not just
for such time as day of exploration
shutting down pushing along and
further on at some junction see it
flare of lights starbright music as
roundabouts Xmas fair pretends at
distance from the trundling carriage
not to be really least bit foreign
