Ozymandias in Normandy
As we climbed on, the great propellers
began to slice the rain-sagged air
with a drone like a distant Luftwaffe
revving up for the next bomb-run.
For all their soaring, though, these birds
are grounded – forever doomed to circle
their hill-high turbines, great unnatural tri-limbs
flailing and moaning atop bone pillars.
Beneath them, burrowing into the hill,
a concrete blockhouse: ventilator shafts, two
oblong doorways opening into the dark.
A path gobbled by grass and nettles.
In bas-relief a grandiose headless eagle
grips a defaced globe. Square lettering
still partly readable: “IM KAMPF GEGEN ...
ENGLAN ...”. Then: “.....F ..ITLER.”
