In the Mirror
The argument’s no longer with
his father’s put-your-mitts-up
cheeky-chappy face
whenever he needs to ask
the mirror who the hell it’s talking to.
It isn’t any more
his barmy old man squaring up
for one more championship bout.
There is suddenly
another look to answer, gazing out
with such forbearance in the eyes it hurts.
It is the dark angel of his father’s mother
requiring them to be sensible,
and trusting the look she gives them
is enough.
