A Ghazal for M, 14.ii.2007
Road noise waits at a skylight. Through breaks in
perpetual rain, light picks up your outline.
Business is done. The night wanders us in
to health, so the following meanings are fine.
As the true double in that frame is:
we assume a resting angle, not sickened with wine.
Or drawing our world as a bangle on trouble’s bow
string, intrigued by the cut word, the broken line.
The globes can fire perpetually outward,
making the void free where they shine.
Nothing less than chance has spun them
into array, wrapped in oxides, a skinful in twine
the self wrapped to a match that flares
as it winds down alert in gold. No sign
of difference, except in the stems of the bond,
love enumerating each flutter of the spine.
This is an end of variance: to be sure,
that we are here, that your face is mine.
