Maureen Almond
In Her Third Age
(based on the Silver Age from Ovid)
A woman doesn’t harbour wicked thoughts
or plot deliberately,
but she is ready for a fight.
From here it’s possible to slip back -
back into soft silver time,
but not at any price.
Not if it means his word is law
or that she, a mere mortal
has to treat him like some sort of god.
Not if her ideas are nagging in his ears
or she has to hide the 'phone bill.
Not if she sees him change his moods
as often as he changes his socks.
His laurel days are done;
when there’s a quarrel, she won’t make peace
he’ll sit at her feet while she considers things.
This metamorphosis they’re going through,
he won’t know if she’s being deified
or he’s finally coming down to earth.
