From Nantucket
Your threadbare hooded sweatshirt
opens its arms on the line
to scare away disaster.
You waved from the lighthouse as if
the loveliest castaway ever
the day it came to hand.
Its washed-out red is a flag
guiding me in to harbour.
When I take if off the line it puts
one cool arm round my shoulder.
I fold it under your pillow
and know you’ll be home tomorrow.
