love poem
I get up early,
and tune in the radio
and listen to "By the time
I get to Phoenix," but
I'm not going to Phoenix,
I'm going to Manchester,
which is probably less
romantic but, still, I'm
thinking about what you'll
be doing when I get there.
The girl from the house
across comes out into
the garden and stands,
hands on her swelling stomach,
breathing in the clear air.
It's April Fool's Day, I know,
but I'm crazy to think that you'd
ever be like that, by me.
The Spring sun is stirring the
dull roots again. I want you
here, with me, and not thirty
miles away. By the time I get to
Manchester you'll be working.
By the time I'm drunk you'll
be sleeping. By the time
I'm sober you'll still be
thirty miles away and
I'll be wondering why I bothered
to get drunk, it never brings
you any nearer to me.
These Spring days are disturbing.
I want them filled with poems
and pregnant girls.
