Forever Lunchtime
I slowed my car to a halt
at the lights,
the wide doors of the big Comprehensive
were gaping open, setting free a rush of kids.
They flooded out over the pavements
and grass, in a fizzing mass.
They crossed in front of me. Oblivious.
One girl stood out,
her long hair swinging boldly.
She walked with two smaller friends,
looking ahead.
A few yards behind
he followed with his mates,
who yapped and chattered like puppies,
springing this way and that, their round
faces grinning.
He remained focussed,
tranced by the girl in front.
Wanting a little mercy.
The light flashed amber. I moved off,
catching sight of him in the mirror,
trailing up the slope behind her.
