Sometimes
Sometimes in our exciting relationship
sometimes at night
when you refuse me in spite
which doesn’t add curiosity
as I suspect you think it might
but plants seed for the next perhaps last time
yes darling, that’s right
sometimes, you nasty
with your cluttered perplexity
wide-eyed with the responsibility of being yourself
when you open your muddy brown eyes
like cigarette-burn holes
curled at the edges
into your yesterday’s unwashed mascara
sometimes I hate you.
‘Flex your stomach muscles’ you say
‘how you do when you try
to pretend you’re not fat.’
Pupil of nobody on earth
sometimes your voice betrays your master.
Alistair Wisker has recently been appointed tutor in creative writing at Ruskin College Oxford after many years planning and teaching courses at the University of East Anglia in Norwich. Publications include studies of Nathanael West (Macmillan), Robert Creeley, Lawrence Ferlinghetti and William Carlos Williams. Poetry published in two slim volumes and many magazines including The Rialto, Poetry Review, Ambit and Stand.
