Anne Lewis-Smith
Estuary Reflections
Seeping seawards, this river
drains light from darkening skies
then turns its even surface
to a brilliant mirror.
Veiled by sudden nightfall
two figures reach the sandy rim,
unseen their black reflections
fall flat upon that brightness.
Shadow feet at the water’s edge
legs scissoring river light
snip, snip,
snip, snip.
cut-outs slicing stillness.
Then gone.
