Punk and Poetess (1)
...for punk and poesie agree so pat
you cannot well be this and not be that.. .
Robert Gould 1660-1708
Alas, poor Robert; Orpheus you weren't
But still you got your plucking fingers burnt.
You badmouthed Sappho for her "guilt and gout"
And so the Sisters ripped your daylights out.
Poor soul, you were, to borrow from The Bard,
Hoist, willy-nilly, by your own petard -
Not lifted high by pyrotechnic art
But skittled by an ill-considered fart.
Prometheus you weren't, but from afar
You shed a little light on what we are.
(1) " Punk (ie slut) and Poetess" was a phrase applied to Aphra Behn, adapted from Robert Gould's contemporary crowd-pleasing satire.
