Shuddering in Cell 22
convicted for a serving-spoon,
ears sea roaring in a shell,
eyes slivers of moon.
Wrists turning, again again
blistered fingers, chafing skin,
hard, grimy soles tread old terrain
hare blood glitters on a gin.
Quickly taken from Swine's Heath
(police mistrusting 'gyppo looks')
an airborne wreath
clouds of rooks.
Judge's words could splinter glass
fob-keys jingle cups of tin,
a priest in orphrey sounds the mass,
speech, coffin made to house her in.
Fingers rub again again!
Because she stole a serving-spoon,
cogs grind onward, jagged rain
drains silver
from the moon.
