Eamonn Shanahan
Vision
You thought you saw God on Hampstead Heath:
Clouds scudded to a brilliant darkness -
a rainbow upside down -
a goddess big as the sky.
It was hard to take. Self-reflection and that.
You looked about for confirmation in the world,
felt a loneliness of the moment,
the people with chores in their hearts.
Later, in the pub, we wrangled
with manifestation and archetype
in front of two Hampstead ladies
on about weather and husbands:
Sandy saw an inverted rainbow on the Heath
out walking Dusty this morning -
comfortable as a colour supplement
she lobs a nut, a titbit for the spaniel.
