The Mortal Immortal
Dawn, O virgin gold,
Vision of sacred mould,
Faith’s fire of windows gone
To feed that unicorn
Captured in the field:
First love that fills men’s eyes, so that their lips are sealed:
Straightway from the stars,
Night’s wisdom-teeming vase
Upheld by downcast eyes,
Shape of the fallen skles,
Girl redeeming space,
Printing on absent air the God-encountered face:
Image of God’s laws,
Rock to the eagle’s claws,
Setting those wings to beat,
Proportioned hands and feet,
Bring love to the loins;
Bind that great glory down, then stamp it on the coins.
