Note
The title, language, preoccupations and shape of the poem take their point of departure from the world of navigation; It is intended as a fantasia charted via place-names, song, scraps of navigational argot and other bearings that embrace journeying. It is though centred around a specific RAF bombing attack on the Nippes Marshalling Yards in Köln on Christmas Eve, 1944.
Schragmusik was a term given to the angled fire from cannon fixed at eighty degrees on the fusilage of a German night-fighter as it stalked bombers from below. The term’s broader sense (angled or oblique music, jazz ) is equally applicable here.
The poem is dedicated to the men of RAF Lancaster 103 Squadron stationed at Eisham Wolds and, in particular, to my father.
