Softscape
A walk in drizzle from clouds coral and slate.
Three cows, silicon-grey, graze the last acre
before its ‘exciting development’.
Nothing’s left. It’s late now, no shelter,
and, deep in the valley, the rushhour torrent
panders to the town’s eccentricities
of temperance, voting patterns and birthrate,
the fi ction that love is opposite of hate,
and when I leave, as I surely must,
that I shall creep over those hills caught
in a momentary splash of sunlight
where I can hide behind the women
I might have loved — their legs, their aprons;
I will crouch behind their eyes.
